The Historic 107 Henley Beach Road: A South Australian Legacy

107 Henley Beach Road, now the home of Mile End Office Furniture, holds a rich history that is deeply woven into South Australia’s cultural heritage. Originally opened as the Star Theatre on March 2, 1916, this iconic structure quickly became a landmark in Torrensville. The Star Theatre featured a double-fronted façade, two charming shops, and a grand entrance that welcomed visitors to an enchanting world of entertainment. Inside, the theatre could seat up to 1,000 patrons, offering luxurious amenities like tip-up seats in the premium section and upholstered seating in the sixpenny area.

Over time, the Star Theatre experienced several changes in ownership and purpose. In 1917, Clifford Theatres Ltd acquired it. By 1947, the building came under the control of Greater Union, one of Australia’s leading cinema chains. However, as the entertainment landscape evolved, the theatre closed its doors in 1954. The building then found new life, serving various purposes such as auction rooms and retail shops. It adapted to the changing needs of the community.

Although the physical structure has transformed over the years, the legacy of the Star Theatre continues. Today, Mile End Office Furniture proudly occupies this historic site, continuing the tradition of serving the South Australian community with dedication and excellence.
